A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S SHAKESPEARE is a light, summer tribute to the Bard. With a touch of Into the Woods to it, the characters wander in and out of a clearing - the Forest of Arden, the Woods of Athens, Prospero’s island - or what you will.
The Mechanicals burst in to rehearse their play. Hamlet offers some advice. Shylock, Portia, Romeo and Ophelia all have their reasons to be here. Witches and heroes, lovers and monarchs tell us of madness, injustice, love and war. A family of refugees appears, searching, and exhausted. Comedy comes in 16th- and 20th- century form, music from Broadway, pirates, and an a cappella choir. There are some unusual gender choices, different styles of costume and directing, and a pulsing energy driving everything forward.
There’s something for everyone – just “as they liked it” back in Shakespeare’s day!
We hope you enjoy this heartfelt celebration of his work.
